"The Sound of Music" is based on the memories of singer and writer Maria Augusta von Trapp, who emigrated from Austria to America.
She founded a family choir with her children and became world famous. Back in 1937, the choir won first prize at the folk singing competition at the Salzburg Festival.
In 1959, the story - somewhat glamorised - was successfully brought to the stage and to film in the musical "The Sound of Music". The film's original locations can be visited in Salzburg.
