Fort Hohensalzburg

The largest fully preserved fortress in Central Europe

Fort Hohensalzburg was built in 1077 by archbishop Gebhard and was consistently extended until it became the largest fully preserved fortress in Central Europe.

The insides, too, have been gloriously decorated: the Golden Hall and Golden parlour are embellished by magnificent gothic carvings and ornamental paintings.

The medieval prince's rooms are especially worth seeing, as well as the fort museum, where you can learn about its long history.

Fort Hohensalzburg can be visited all year round. Furthermore, there are events held regularly - such as the fort concerts or the theatre play "Jedermann" - on the medieval grounds, for example in the romantic inner ward and on the bastion.
